The song Pepito by Ken’cy is the story of a sinister trajectory quite common in Sub-Saharan Africa in general and in Cameroon in particular. Inspired by real events, the song tells the story of a young Cameroonian graduate (Pepito), who in view of the morose socio-economic climate that characterizes his daily life after several years of study, will decide to leave his country for the first time to Europe by “taking the road”. Taking an irregular route which consists of crossing from country to country (Nigeria-Niger-Algeria) by land and sea, crossing the borders illegally, in hiding the least reassuring, and most worrying insecurity. This in the hope of finding better living conditions.
After having overcome many adventures and crossing multiple dangers on the way, Pepito as many illegal migrants will eventually drown in the Mediterranean. Far from being a reprobation of illegal migrants, this song is above all a tribute to all those brave people who have disappeared on the road to “adventure”, leaving behind brothers, sisters, children, parents, entire families in desolation. This song aims to sensitize both national and international opinion against illegal migration.
But beyond awareness, this song aims to challenge all actors in society and to provoke a deep reflection on the complexity of the political, socio-economic and cultural factors of this social phenomenon whose main victims are the young people of the countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
